We Stand Strong With Budapest Pride

The 30th Budapest Pride is a historic milestone for LGBTIQ+ rights in Central and Eastern Europe. As the first Pride march in the region, it has been a beacon of hope and progress for three decades.

On March 18, 2025, the Hungarian parliament passed a law restricting freedom of assembly and effectively banning Pride events. The law also authorizes surveillance of demonstrators using facial recognition technology and imposes fines on participants.

The LGBTIQ+ community has existed since the beginning of humanity: we have been here longer and will remain longer than politicians in suits who campaign with exclusion. This attack on freedom of assembly affects all of Europe.

Europe Must Act Now

Our petition Act Against Orbán’s Pride Ban addresses German and European politicians with three key demands:

  • Clear diplomatic consequences for Hungary
  • Protection of fundamental rights in the EU
  • Solidarity with the Hungarian LGBTIQ+ community

What Happened in Budapest

28 June 2025 will go down in history as the day when more than 200,000 courageous people took to the streets of Budapest, defying Viktor Orbán’s oppressive ban and creating not only the largest Pride march in Hungarian history, but the biggest street protest ever seen in Budapest. What we witnessed was not just a celebration of LGBTIQ+ rights, but a powerful demonstration that democracy cannot be silenced and love cannot be banned.

The 30th Budapest Pride became a symbol of resistance that echoed far beyond Hungary’s borders. From families with pushchairs to teenagers draped in rainbow capes, from over 70 Members of the European Parliament to supporters who travelled from 33 countries – we marched together as one unstoppable force for freedom and equality.

Four buses from Germany alone brought courageous supporters to Budapest to walk together in solidarity. Thanks to your donations the Freie Ungarische Botschaft can support the costs of the Pride, and the lawyers from the Hungarian human rights NGOs providing legal support with 21,500 EUR in total.

Budapest Pride cannot be banned. Freedom and love cannot be banned. If Pride can be banned in an EU member state, then no one is safe in the EU.

Gergely Karácsony, Mayor of Budapest
